“He looked like a fucked-up hotdog!”
It’s been a long time coming, but after some first-look images recently, Troma Entertainment and Legendary Pictures have released the first teaser for The Toxic Avenger reboot.
Oozing that gritty, cheap, and very campy Troma vibe that fans have come to adore, the short clip offers us very little in terms of actual footage from the movie. For the most part we get a montage of delightfully R-rated interviews as townsfolk discuss a mysterious new vigilante.
The news coverage is broken into by a breaking story, giving us just a peek at what to expect in the final film. The “Nasty Lads” gang terrorize a diner at gun-point, only for the door to break open and a diminutive silhouette to approach. As one gang member sneers in disbelief, he promptly loses his jaw…
Keeping most of the campy and over-the-top gore off-screen, we see just enough to know we’re in for one hell of a ride with this one. Ending with some of that trademark slapstick Troma comedy, fans of Lloyd Kauffman’s sizeable catalogue will surely adore this reboot based on this short clip alone.
The Toxic Avenger stars Peter Dinklage, Kevin Bacon, Elijah Wood, and Jacob Tremblay, although none can be identified from the clip. What Troma and Legendary continue to stress with each new piece of media surrounding the film, is that this is not a remake. In a press release with the first teaser poster, Troma stated multiple times that the aim is to tell a new story, but retain that campy, over-the-top Troma vibe of the original.
If this teaser is any indication of the completed work, the filmmakers have succeeded.
The movie does not currently have a release date, but met with rave reviews when it recently premiered at Beyond Fest. We’re sure one isn’t too far away, and we’ll let you know as soon as it lands.
