Last we heard of a potential I Know What You Did Last Summer reboot was the encouraging comments from series lead Jennifer Love Hewitt that she would “100%” return.
We know very little concrete information regarding the project other than a script exists, and a director is attached. Jennifer Kaytin Robinson will direct from a script she penned with Leah McKendrick, it is said to follow similar beats to 2022’s Scream, with two original stars eyed to return.
However, we also know that Freddie Prinze Jr. and Jennifer Love Hewitt have not officially received an offer. In fact, we reported almost a year ago that Prince Jr publicly decried being “attached,” calling the use of his name “hype.”
However, we can quite confidently say the project is still very much pressing ahead over at Sony, and have received a few tantalising pieces of info about the script from a trusted source.
Firstly, we are told that the dialogue contains quite a few “witty one-liners.” This would certainly be in line with the project following the blueprint set by the Halloween and Scream reboots, but not really fitting with the Last Summer vibe. The original movie, which this will allegedly be a direct sequel to, is quite serious and dark throughout.
Secondly, we are told an “iconic” line will be repurposed from the original film, as well as the film containing plenty of nods and easter eggs to its lore. What could this iconic line be? The series nerd in us desperately wants it to be Julie James’ wail of “What are you waiting for?!” However, we’ll have to wait and see.
Still, we are in the dark about exact plot details, most importantly if the iconic Fisherman will return. However, what we’re hearing at least puts to rest worries that the film is no longer in development.
It is still moving forward, just very slowly. We’ll be keeping a close eye on this one and report more solid details as soon as we have them.
