The slasher genre is one that never seems to go out of style, often evolving while keeping its signature thrills and chills intact. With Neon’s Hell of a Summer, that tradition continues with a fresh, blood-soaked spin, already being hailed as one of the best slashers of the decade following its premiere at the 2023 Toronto Film Festival.
Set for a theatrical release on Friday, April 4th, 2025, the horror-comedy promises a wild, fun, and terrifying ride. Directed by stars Finn Wolfhard (“Stranger Things”) and Billy Bryk (When You Finish Saving the World) in their feature film directorial debut, Hell of a Summer blends traditional slasher thrills with a unique sense of campy humour.
In the film, the seemingly peaceful Camp Pineway becomes a deadly setting when 24-year-old camp counselor Jason Hochberg (Fred Hechinger – Gladiator 2, Fear Street) finds himself facing more than just the challenges of bonding with his younger colleagues. A masked killer begins to pick off the camp’s counsellors one by one in brutal, gory fashion, turning the idyllic camp into a nightmare.
Along with Wolfhard, Bryk, and Hechinger, the film boasts a talented ensemble cast featuring Abby Quinn (Knock at the Cabin, Torn Hearts), D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai (“Reservation Dogs”), Pardis Saremi (“Death and Other Details”), Rosebud Baker (“Life & Beth”), and Adam Pally (Sonic the Hedgehog 3, “Fubar”).
Ahead of the film’s release, Wolfhard and Bryk sat down with Scream Horror Magazine to discuss the enduring appeal of the slasher sub-genre. They delved into why it has remained a cornerstone of horror for so long and continues to captivate audiences, before reflecting on how their love for old-school slasher films influenced their desire to bring something fresh to the genre while honouring its rich history and traditions.
