FELIPE VARGAS TALKS “LEPRECHAUN” REBOOT

Posted on: March 26th, 2024

As we reported some time ago, the long-standing horror-comedy series Leprechaun is due for a reboot.

Lionsgate and Vertigo Films are overseeing the project, described as “elevated.” A script is known to exist, penned by Mike Van Waes, and Felipe Vargas is set to direct.

Now, Vargas, known for his short Milk Teeth, has spoken of his hopes for the project. The filmmaker spoke of his pride at being asked aboard an established franchise, and what he hopes to bring to it:
“I’m so honored to be on that project. It’s such a cool franchise. To me what makes the franchise so special is that it really is limitless. It doesn’t need to be grounded. It can just be gory, sexy, crazy.”

Vargas also commented on his intention to bring the series back to a scarier tone, but maintain some of the comedy the Leprechaun films are known for:
“I would love for it to be scary as hell and also hilarious. I think we’re going back to a lot of the roots of [the franchise] in a lot of different ways, which I’m really excited about. But I think you also want to bring on a new audience. So it’s a really tricky one to figure out,”

We currently don’t have any concrete plot details for this ninth entry, and no production date has been issued as of this writing. However, a rumour suggests that former Leprechaun star Warwick Davis is interested in reprising the titular role. If true, this would mark the actor’s seventh turn in the series, and his first time donning the make-up since 2003’s Leprechaun: Back 2 Tha Hood.

Things are certainly moving, so we’ll keep an eye on this one and bring you any further updates.
