FEDE ALVAREZ’S ALIEN: ROMULUS TO GO THEATRICAL?

Posted on: April 27th, 2023

It is undeniable that there is still a huge appetite for the Alien franchise, even after 44 years. So, with the announcement of a new movie helmed by horror heavyweight Fede Alvarez, fans rejoiced. It seemed the one downside was that the film would be released as a Hulu original, with 20th Century Studios doubting the series’ commercial potential after the relative failure of Alien: Covenant. But could this be about to change?

Following the success of the 2022 Predator prequel Prey for 20th Century and Hulu, it seems that talks are abound that the newest Alien offering will be boosted to a theatrical release, with an immediate streaming period to follow.

Given the glowing reception of Prey, and the fact that Alien is now seen as the sister franchise to the Predator films, this is little surprise. Prey was the first Predator film since the 1987 original to attain universal praise and has become the most streamed media across Hulu and its associated services.

Little is known about Alien: Romulus, but we do have the following plot synopsis:
“This original standalone feature, based on the original sci-fi horror movie released in 1979, follows a group of young people on a distant world, who find themselves in a confrontation with the most terrifying life form in the universe.”

Besides the involvement of Alvarez and a cast including Cailee Spaeny, Aileen Wu, Spike Fearn and David Jonsson, Alien: Romulus remains quite the mystery.

Will we see the Xenomorph stalk the big screen once more, and if so, what will the returns be? We’ll bring you any further updates as they come in.
