The Alien brand has likely never been as popular as it is currently. Last year, Alien: Romulus brought the franchise roaring back to the big screen, raking in over $350 million worldwide.
And now, with the universally acclaimed television series Alien: Earth, the appetite for more is at an all-time high.
Of course, this is all down to Romulus writer and director Fede Alvarez. So, fans are devastated to learn that the filmmaker will not be returning to direct the upcoming sequel to Alien: Romulus.
Expressing a wish to “pass the torch” onto others, Alvarez has remained attached as a writer on the sequel. Explaining that he’d grown attached to the characters he’d created, Alvarez asserts he is sure Alien “godfather” Ridley Scott will find the perfect directing replacement.
In full, Alvarez said of his decision:
“We just finished the script, actually, for a sequel for ‘Romulus.’ But I’m going to pass the torch on this one as director. I’m going to produce it, with Ridley Scott. We’re going to produce it together and we’re right now trying to find a new filmmaker to come in.”
The filmmaker further elaborated:
“That’s usually what has happened, except for Ridley. Filmmakers come, you make one and you pass the baton to the next one. But we wrote the story because we really love what we started with ‘Romulus’ and we want to continue the story. We love the story and now we just want to find a director that really wants to go for the jugular.”
So, with a sequel script complete, we’ll likely hear news about a director joining the project in the coming months. However, Alvarez choosing to sit out the sequel has undoubtedly disappointed a slew of Alien fans.
