Having made almost $400 million at the worldwide box-office, Alien: Romulus defied all expectations and brought the franchise back to life.
Of course, with such strong numbers, rumblings of a sequel have been afoot since the opening weekend. Previously, filmmaker Fede Alvarez said there had only been “a conversation” about another movie. However, that all appears to have changed, with Alvarez recently revealing his vision for the sequel.
Speaking in a recent interview, Alvarez stated:
“Rodo [Sayagues] and I are working on that right now. We’re excited about where it can go. We’ve almost checked all of the boxes of things that I want to see [in Romulus], and brought back a lot of the things I hadn’t seen in a while. Wherever we go now, we can go into uncharted waters.”
Alvarez’s words suggest a sequel is quite far along in development, and his intention to take Alien into “uncharted waters” sounds undeniably intriguing. Given the futuristic nature of the series, where could it possibly go next?
Alvarez continued:
“I think it’ll be so exciting to go with characters you know from this movie, to a place in the Alien franchise that we’ve never been before, and to discover things that you’ve never seen before.”
Alvarez echoes the words of 20th Century Studios head Steve Asbell, who last year floated his belief that actors Cailee Spaeny and David Jonsson would likely reprise their roles in a sequel.
Alvarez concluded his statement by stating his intentions behind a sequel are pure, and not just a cash grab:
“The mistake usually with sequels is to make them because you can, and because of the success of Romulus, we definitely can make a sequel. But I wouldn’t do it unless we have a really good idea for it, something that’s worthy of the title.”
So, although not officially green-lit, a sequel to Alien: Romulus, with a returning cast and crew seems very probable.
Of course, Alien fans won’t have to wait long for their next fix, as FX and Hulu will be premiering the Alien: Earth television show later this year. So, it seems like a great time to be an Alien devotee!
