“There’s something in the fucking water!”
No, we’re not quoting a brand-new Jaws outing, instead we’re referencing the exquisite new trailer for Alien: Romulus.
After only the briefest of glimpses in a 1-minute teaser some weeks ago, 20th Century Studios have shown a lot more in their final promo clip.
What has gotten genre fans and franchise afficionados breathless is Alien: Romulus’ impeccable production design. With sets that look identical to Ridley Scott’s 1979 original, Fede Alvarez has achieved a sense of continuity unmatched since 1986’s Aliens.
Of course, everything you want to see is here, and it’s glorious. Face-huggers have never been quite as aggressive as they are in this startling clip. Multiple times throughout the short runtime, the creatures are seen scuttling, leaping, and seeming a great deal more predatory.
That familiar beeping of a motion detector warns us of an ever-present threat, and we see cast members begin to meet a slimy foe one-by-one. The original “stalking beast” charm of 1979’s Alien has returned with a vengeance, and fans couldn’t be happier.
Fede Alvarez’s Alien Romulus stars Cailee Spaeny, Aileen Wu, Spike Fearn, Isabela Merced, and David Jonsson. The cast will play a space exploration team in a “distant future,” stumbling upon something they shouldn’t. Still in the series’ established continuity, Alien: Romulus takes place between the first and second instalments.
Set to release on August 16th, the trailer has producer Ridley Scott’s words ringing in fans’ ears, so check it out below.
It looks “fucking great.”
