The Evil Dead franchise is revving back to life with Evil Dead Rise, which is now set to hit theatres on the 21st of April, 2023!
This is a change from the previous release plan, which would have seen the film going straight to the HBO Max streaming service in the U.S. later this year. Test screenings were reportedly met with great enthusiasm from audiences, which may have contributed to this change of plans.
Lee Cronin (The Hole in the Ground) directed Evil Dead Rise, which stars Alyssa Sutherland (The Mist), Lily Sullivan (Picnic at Hanging Rock), Gabrielle Echols (Reminiscence), Morgan Davies (The Hunter), and Nell Fisher. Sam Raimi, Bruce Campbell, and Robert Tapert served as producers and are said to have been very involved in the project.
Here’s the official synopsis for Evil Dead Rise, which sounds pretty damn groovy:
“In the fifth Evil Dead film, a road-weary Beth pays an overdue visit to her older sister Ellie, who is raising three kids on her own in a cramped L.A apartment. The sisters’ reunion is cut short by the discovery of a mysterious book deep in the bowels of Ellie’s building, giving rise to flesh-possessing demons, and thrusting Beth into a primal battle for survival as she is faced with the most nightmarish version of motherhood imaginable.”
