Back in October, we brought you the news that Lionsgate was fast-tracking a reboot of their 2000 hit American Psycho. Well, the studio wasn’t lying when they said things were moving quickly, as American Psycho has found its star.
The project will be directed by Call Me by Your Name filmmaker Luca Guadagnino, from a new script penned by Scott Z. Burns, who is likely best known for the 2011 pandemic hit Contagion.
Now, the reboot has taken a significant leap forward, with the casting of lead character Patrick Bateman.
Following an Academy Award Nominated turn as Elvis Presley in the 2023 biopic Elvis, actor Austin Butler’s career has been unstoppable. Now, reliable sources are reporting that the actor has bagged the lead in American Psycho, a part memorably played in the past by Christian Bale.
Although being billed as a “reboot,” sources were also quick to note that the film will not be a retread of the 2000 adaption. Lionsgate are eager to reinterpret Brett Easton Ellis’ seminal source novel, curious how it will play to a modern audience, and include elements missing from the previous adaption.
Whilst Butler is currently the only star attached, it’s great news for the project, and suggests things are moving quickly behind the scenes. So, we’re expecting more high-profile announcements soon, watch this space.
