Director Eli Roth (Hostel, Knock Knock) and actor Jim Carrey are teaming up on an adaptation of the 2004 comic Aleister Arcane with DreamWorks, written by Jon Croker (The Woman in Black 2). The story follows a midnight horror show host who dies an early death and curses the town that caused it. It sounds a tiny bit like A Nightmare on Elm Street, but hopefully Eli Roth will be able to steer the adaptation into a direction that differentiates it entirely from the Krueger classic.
Synopsis:
A Los Angeles weatherman named Aleister Green who returns to his hometown to host a midnight horror show a la Elvira. Under the guise of a mad scientist named Aleister Arcane, Green performed little skits until the local sponsors balked at the gore. An incident with two kids leads to him to be put on trial, breaking his spirit, and into an early grave. Not long after, grisly activities begin to occur and only the kids have the power to thwart the curse he has laid upon their town.
It’s quite a strange collaboration, but Carrey is not just a comedy star and has dabbled in a few thrillers with The Cable Guy – a loose thriller, I admit – and The Number 23. He’s also set to star in Ana Lily Amirpour’s The Bad Batch and Alexandros Avranas’ True Crimes.
Eli Roth was recently announced as the director of the upcoming remake of Death Wish and there are even talks of a return to The Green Inferno, so he’s far from taking a break from the genre.
