There will be no leftovers… But there will be a second helping! Thanksgiving 2 is happening, and Eli Roth will return to write and direct.
Following the enormous critical success of Roth’s highly-anticipated slasher, it’s little surprise that a second instalment has been greenlit so quickly.
Roth confirmed in an Instagram video, viewable below, that he and Jeff Rendell are currently writing the script.
“We’re gonna take a year off so we can really, really write a great script. We want to outdo ourselves. Make it better than the first one.”
One can surmise that Roth will be undertaking no projects involving active production until Thanksgiving 2 begins its 2025 production. However, the director will be on the promotional trail at some point next year when his video-game adaption Borderlands hits screens.
Thanksgiving initially performed under expectations when first premiering, but subsequently became the best-holding horror release of 2023. In its second weekend the film fell only 31%, whilst most horror releases typically take a tumble of 50% or more.
Currently sitting at a comfortable $40 million worldwide, Thanksgiving has become somewhat of a sleeper hit. Sony-Tri-Star’s eagerness to greenlight a sequel is hardly surprising, as they are currently without a major horror franchise that’s actively making money. The rumoured I Know What You Did Last Summer legacy sequel hasn’t seen any movement since supposed star Freddie Prinze Jr. said he hadn’t even been approached.
Thanksgiving 2 seems a much more sensible route to take, as the hugely positive critical reception and positive word-of-mouth surrounding the original will undoubtedly mean a sequel performs well.
We will keep a close watch on this slasher sequel and bring you more concrete updates when we have them, including a solid release date.
However, for now, we’re delighted to confirm that John Carver will return in 2025.
