Beloved filmmaker Chuck Russell, best known for 1987’s A Nightmare on Elm Street 3, has died.
Born on May 9th 1952, Russell was a native of Park Ridge, Illinois.
Little is known of the director’s early life until his entry into the film business in the mid-1970s. Whilst working on his own screenplays, Russell supported himself working in various positions including production assistant, line producer, and eventually executive producer.
His credits during this time included the horror films The Hearse (1980), Hell Night (1981), and The Seduction (1982).
Whilst working on Hell Night, Russell met production assistant Frank Darabont, and the two began a close working relationship.
1984’s Dreamscape would be Russell’s first produced screenplay. The action-sci-fi horror hybrid starred Dennis Quaid and Kate Capshaw. A minor hit, Dreamscape would catch the attention of New Line Cinema, and propel Russell to mainstream recognition.
New Line appointed Russell and Frank Darabont to take over the third instalment of the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise. Russell and Darabont were tasked with incorporating new elements into an initial idea from Wes Craven and Bruce Wagner.
The result was the horror blockbuster A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors, which Russell also directed.
Following this success, Russell and Darabont re-teamed for 1988’s The Blob. A remake of the 1950s classic, the film was well received critically but not a box-office success.
Following The Blob, Russell would take a six-year break from filmmaking. Upon his return, he would secure one of the biggest films of his career with 1994’s The Mask. The Jim Carrey vehicle saw Russell work closely with Industrial Light and Magic, earning an Academy Award Nomination for Best Visual Effects.
For the next few years, Russell would continue to be an in-demand director in Hollywood. His credits included 1996’s Eraser, 2002’s The Scorpion King, and 2000’s Bless the Child.
Following a fourteen-year film hiatus, Russell began his final run of films with 2016’s I Am Wrath starring John Travolta. Next came the Bollywood production Junglee, and finally 2024’s Witchboard. The latter would be Russell’s return to the horror genre after 24 years, and was a remake of the 1986 classic of the same name.
At the time of Russell’s death, the filmmaker had three genre projects listed as in pre-production. It is currently unknown if the movies will proceed without him.
Russell died on July 22nd 2026 at his home in San Diego, California. His passing has been described by authorities as “unexpected,” but no cause of death has been released.
Chuck Russell was 74 years old.
