Fans wept this past week when USA and SyFy announced they had cancelled Chucky after three seasons.
The killer doll’s time on the small screen had been greatly adored by the fanbase, and greeted with much critical praise.
However, one heck of a consolation prize is about to come in the form of Doc of Chucky. A retrospective documentary on the legendary horror franchise, Doc of Chucky comes to us from Thommy Hutson, who has previously excelled in the field.
Hutson’s previous output includes the award-winning slasher retrospectives Never Sleep Again and Crystal Lake Memories. Looking into the Elm Street and Friday the 13th series’, these documentaries spanned a minimum of 4 hours, and a maximum of 7, giving fans a detailed look at the making of each respective film.
Distributor Shudder said the following in a recent press release:
“Doc of Chucky tells the story of the cult horror empire through interviews with cast, crew, and horror icons such as Don Mancini, Brad Dourif, Jennifer Tilly, Catherine Hicks, Chris Sarandon, John Waters, Fiona Dourif, Perrey Reeves, Gerrit Graham, David Kirschner, and dozens more. Directed by Thommy Hutson (the producer of documentaries Never Sleep Again: The Elm Street Legacy and Crystal Lake Memories: The Complete History of Friday the 13th), this is the ultimate account of the Child’s Play film franchise, and Chucky with clips, photographs, archival documents, behind-the-scenes footage, and more.”
Of the project, Hutson said the following in a companion statement:
“After exploring the terrifying and fascinating worlds of A Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th, Scream, and Return of the Living Dead, it felt like a natural progression to explore Chucky’s iconic and enduring legacy. Doc of Chucky is truly a love letter to a film franchise and character that’s been scaring, thrilling, and making us laugh for decades. It was also a privilege to meet and talk to so many wonderful cast and crew who helped bring to life the incredible story—across seven films—that Don Mancini and David Kirschner started 36 years ago. I think it’s safe to say viewers will learn why, in the most entertaining way possible, you really can’t keep a good guy down!”
So, it’s safe to assume that Child’s Play fans have plenty to look forward to when Doc of Chucky releases to Shudder on November 1st 2024.
