A little while back we reported on the second trailer for Blumhouse’s Imaginary. Of course, we made mention of director Jeff Wadlow’s previous horror hit Truth or Dare. Whilst the film may not have received the warmest critical reception, it was a box-office success, bringing in $95 million on a $3.5 million budget.

Given that impressive box-office haul, it’s little surprise that Blumhouse heavily considered a sequel. Whilst promoting Imaginary, Wadlow let slip that plans were in place for an intriguing meta-style sequel!

“We actually wrote a ‘Truth or Dare’ sequel,” Wadlow began. ““It begins with Markie and Olivia, Lucy and [Violett Beane’s] characters,” They’re in this scene, and it feels like our ‘Final Destination’ kind-of ‘Truth or Dare’ scene, and Markie starts laughing in the middle of it. You hear, ‘Cut!’ and the director walks on the set, and we do the ‘New Nightmare’ treatment where we reveal that Lucy and Violett are still friends. They’re going to go on this trip with the other actors from ‘Truth or Dare,’ with Tyler, Landon [Liboiron] and Sam [Lerner]. Everyone who was in the first film, they’re all buddies, and we find out what happened is the writers of the first film had researched a real demon. Just as Calux can haunt a game in the film, he’s now decided to haunt a movie in the real world. It was scary and surreal and funny and played a lot with subjectivity.”

According to Wadlow, Jason Blum had ordered the sequel, and a script was complete, with filming expected to begin in March of 2020. Of course, the world battled the COVID pandemic just as the sequel, titled Truth or Dare: IRL, was set to go before the cameras. Unable to reschedule production, the New Nightmare-esque film was cancelled.

It’s been almost 6 years since Truth or Dare became a surprise hit, so, would Wadlow resurrect that sequel script? Sadly, no.

“That ship has sailed,” Wadlow finished, following his disclosure of the cancelled sequel.

Interesting revelations, indeed! Do you think a meta Truth or Dare sequel would capture an audience all these years later? Or is it best that this game remains unfinished?
