Dermot Mulroney (Insidious: Chapter 3, Umma) is appearing in next year’s Scream 6 from directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett (Scream, Ready or Not), and early rumours pointed toward him playing a cop. In a recent interview with the website Screen Rant, the actor confirmed that this rumour is indeed accurate—and hinted at an intriguing backstory for his character.
“Yeah, I play a cop, so finally they’re asking me to play cops here and there, this is one of them,” Mulroney said. “I guess I shouldn’t say that my daughter is one of the victims, but I don’t have to describe how or in what way, so that’s what draws me into the story is strong family ties.”
Mulroney also noted that he watched 2011’s Scream 4 and 2022’s Scream to prepare for his role and that shooting is currently underway. “I’m really thrilled to throw down with this great cast, much of the same lead cast from Scream 2022,” he said.
Speaking of the returning cast, Scream 6 sees Melissa Barrera, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Mason Gooding, and Jenna Ortega returning as Sam, Mindy, Chad, and Tara respectively. Courteney Cox is also back as Gale Weathers, while Hayden Panettiere is reprising the fan-favourite role of Kirby Reed from Scream 4. In addition to Mulroney, the new cast this time around includes Samara Weaving (Ready or Not), Jack Champion (Avatar: The Way of Water), Liana Liberato (The Beach House), Devyn Nekoda (Ghostwriter, Josh Segarra (Arrow), and Henry Czerny (Ready or Not).
In Scream 6, which was written by Guy Busick and James Vanderbilt: “The Scream saga continues with the four survivors of the Ghostface killings as they leave Woodsboro behind and start a fresh chapter.” The film is set to slash into cinemas on the 31st of March, 2023.
