It’s been quite a while since we’ve had an update on the proposed Dead by Daylight film adaption.
The online multiplayer horror survival game remains the biggest of its ilk, and is still wildly popular among players. So, of course, this made it prime material for a big screen adaption.
However, outside of the initial 2023 announcement that Blumhouse Productions would oversee the adaption, we’ve learned nothing since. But we’re pleased to let you know that that has all changed!
It has been confirmed that genre regulars Alexandre Aja and David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick have been working on a script for quite a while. Aja has written and directed several high-profile horror projects including Haute Tension, P2, and Crawl. McGoldrick is undoubtedly best known for his work in The Conjuring Universe, having penned the second, third, and fourth entries.
Aja will not be directing Dead by Daylight due to prior commitments to Under Paris 2, so the search is currently on for a director.
Of the appointment of Aja and McGoldrick, producer Jason Blum said:
“What David and Alexandre bring to Dead by Daylight is a rare balance of character driven storytelling and relentless genre intensity. Drawing from survival horror and psychological terror, their work establishes a world where fear is not just experienced, but earned. It is a cinematic blueprint designed to attract a director who can elevate that vision through performance and scale.”
How the game’s concept and multiple villains will be woven into a movie remains unknown, but undoubtedly, we’ll learn hints soon. Ideally Blumhouse hope to repeat the enormous success they’ve had with their Five Nights at Freddy’s adaptions. So, we’ll just have to wait and see how everything pans out.
