DAVID GORDON GREEN’S “EXORCIST” TRILOGY CANCELLED; MIKE FLANAGAN PROMISES “RADICAL NEW TAKE” ON SERIES

Posted on: June 6th, 2024

It’s only been a few weeks since we reported that horror maestro Mike Flanagan was being eyed to bring The Exorcist back to the big screen.

Now, we can confirm that not only is Flanagan set to take over the series, but that David Gordon Green’s planned trilogy has been scrapped.

Flanagan and Blumhouse Productions have confirmed the filmmaker’s involvement in what Flanagan describes as “a radical new take” on the mythology.

It has also been confirmed that Flanagan will direct, write, and produce this upcoming reboot.

The promise of something “new” all but confirms that David Gordon Green’s planned trilogy of films is off the table.

Following 2023’s The Exorcist: Believer, Green had envisioned two more legacy sequels, beginning with The Exorcist: Deceiver. Due for a June 2025 release, the project was announced prematurely. Subsequently, the film vanished from the release roster following Believer’s radical underperformance at the box-office. Following this, Green “stepped back” from the project, and we speculated if Mike Flanagan was being brought in to retool Deceiver.

However, now it seems we have confirmation that Flanagan plans to reinvent the series completely.

Ordinarily, a complete rebrand after such a high-profile outing is… unusual. However, NBC and Universal paid $400 million for The Exorcist rights, and they likely won’t give up until they see some returns.

Is Mike Flanagan the man for the job? We’ll just have to wait and see.
