We reported back in May that David Arquette had been confirmed as part of the cast for the as-yet-untitled fifth Scream movie, which will be helmed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett (the duo behind 2019’s brilliant Ready or Not). But Arquette is not the only member of the original cast who’ll be returning: Courteney Cox will reprise her iconic role as news reporter Gale Weathers!
Like Arquette, who plays Dewey Riley in the series, Cox has been part of every Scream movie to date. Her character had a narrow escape at the end of Scream 4. Will she be so lucky this time…?
No official word yet on whether Neve Campbell, who plays Sidney Prescott, will be back for round five, though the actor has confirmed that conversations are underway. Matthew Lillard, who played Stu Macher in the original film, has also noted that he’d be interested in returning. Given all the twists and turns the franchise is known for, we wouldn’t be surprised to learn that Stu survived his injuries after all.
James Vanderbilt (Zodiac) and Guy Busick (Castle Rock) wrote the screenplay for the upcoming movie, which is slated for a 2021 release. Kevin Williamson and Chad Villella are executive producing, with Paul Neinstein and William Sherak producing.
