Just a few weeks ago, we brought you the news that The Craven Estate had partnered with Paramount Pictures to bring A Nightmare on Elm Street back to the screen.
It was assumed that this was made possible due to the upcoming merger between Paramount and Warner Bros. Of course, Warner Bros. own the international rights to Nightmare, and with Paramount about to take over their catalogue, they’d have access to all the rights with the Craven Estate’s domestic rights aboard.
This schism has been keeping Freddy Krueger dormant, as The Craven Estate have been unwilling to meet in the middle with their share of the rights. The merger with Paramount seemed to have solved all of that…
However, word reaches us that Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema have no intention of partnering with Paramount and The Craven Estate.
In fact, heavy rumours suggest that Warner Bros. are developing their own Nightmare reboot, flexing their international rights, and competing directly with Paramount’s project.
With the Paramount/Warner Bros. merger now delayed until 2027, Warner’s seem determined to beat Paramount to the punch, and produce a new movie first.
A source with insider information said:
“Sources with knowledge of the matter think Paramount figured that by the time their movie got underway, the WarnerMount deal would have closed and Warners would be compelled to release the Paramount version overseas. But Warners’ Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy didn’t care for that plan. Now they’re looking to make their own movie, which they can only distribute overseas, and are in talks with Lee Cronin to produce, write, and direct.”
It’s all very chaotic, and is not an easy position for such a beloved property to find itself in. If both studios are racing to produce a new Nightmare instalment, the quality of either resulting movie could be rather poor. Furthermore, fans would surely be confused, especially if Warner Bros. can only distribute their project overseas.
With Freddy Krueger caught in a vicious tug-of-war, what will the result be? Furthermore, do we even want it?
