Already a hit amongst festival critics, and having taken home the Audience Award and the Golden Raven at the 2021 Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival, Cody Calahan’s hilarious, neon and blood-soaked nostalgia trip, Vicious Fun comes to Shudder this week.
Penned by James Villeneuve and starring Evan Marsh (Shazam!), Amber Goldfarb (Appiness), Ari Millen (Orphan Black), Julian Richings (Shudder’s Anything For Jackson), Robert Maillet (Sherlock Holmes), Sean Baek (Killjoys) and David Koechner (Anchorman), Vicious Fun shadows Joel (Evan Marsh), a caustic 1980’s film critic for a national horror magazine accidentally stumbles into a secret underground self-help group for serial killers. With every exit locked, the only thing left to do is for Joel to do his best to blend in with his homicidal surroundings or risk becoming the next victim.
With the film arriving on Shudder on the 29th of July, SCREAM sat down with Calahan who discussed overcoming the obstacles that came with tackling his first horror-comedy and gauging the violence and gore so as to echo the outrageous, self-aware sense of humour in the film.
