Last October, it was reported that Amazon would be tackling one of Stephen King’s most famous properties.
His debut novel Carrie is set to be adapted into a limited series for the streaming service, with filmmaker Mike Flanagan at the helm. Of course, the involvement of Flanagan excited King fans, as the filmmaker has produced some of the author’s most beloved adaptions, including Gerald’s Game and Doctor Sleep.
Despite all being quiet for the last while, we now have some rather exciting news!
According to reliable sources, actress Summer H. Howell is circling the lead role of Carrie White.
Howell is perhaps best known for her turn as Alice Pierce in Don Mancini’s 2013 sequel Curse of Chucky. Howell would reprise the role for a brief cameo in 2017’s follow-up Cult of Chucky.
Away from the iconic franchise, Howell has also appeared in genre work such as 2023’s All Fun and Games, 2024’s Time Cut, and that same year’s Spirit in the Blood.
Reps for Amazon have yet to comment on Howell’s involvement in the series, but negotiations are said to be “ongoing.”
Howell’s involvement comes as Amazon issued a straight-to-series order for Carrie, hinting that they have great faith in Flanagan’s vision.
An official logline describes Mike Flanagan’s Carrie as:
“a bold and timely reimagining of the story of misfit high-schooler Carrie White, who has spent her life in seclusion with her domineering mother. After her father’s sudden and untimely death, Carrie finds herself contending with the alien landscape of public High School, a bullying scandal that shatters her community, and the emergence of mysterious telekinetic powers.”
It is currently unknown if Flanagan will direct the adaption in its entirety, or allow other filmmakers to take the helm.
Of course, this marks the fifth time King’s novel has been adapted. Beginning with 1976’s feature adaption, a failed Broadway musical followed in 1988. 2002 marked the first time Carrie was adapted for television, but as a two-hour film. Finally, in 2013, the project went theatrical again with another modern updating. However, Flanagan’s project will mark the first time the property has taken an episodic nature.
