It’s hard to believe it’s been 21 years since Christopher Smith made everyone afraid to board a late-night train on the London Underground.
2004’s Creep starred Franka Potente as Kate, a young woman locked in Charring Cross tube station after missing the last train. After meeting an assortment of colourful characters, it becomes apparent something sinister lurks in the bowels of the tube station.
Before the night is over, Kate will be taken hostage by a deformed cannibalistic hermit named Craig. She will also learn the dark history of medical experimentation covered up by London’s tube system.
Despite the passage of time, Creep still strikes a chord with audiences, particularly those who are frequent travellers.
Despite Creep’s success leading to bigger things, including 2006’s Severance, creator Christopher Smith has decided to return to his roots.
We can confirm that Smith is set to write and direct a reboot of his 2004 debut, entitled The Creep.
Coming to us from Dan Films, Newscope Films, and HanWay Films, original Creep producers Julie Baines and Jason Newmark are set to return alongside Smith. Also reprising their duties will be cinematographer Danny Cohen and production designer John Frankish.
The Creep is set to star Jasmin Jobson as a struggling artist forced to return to her criminal past as a drug-runner. Wicked actor Andy Nyman will co-star as a captive of Craig, helping others escape where he can.
It is currently unknown if actor Sean Harris will reprise his role as the titular Creep, Craig.
Production is expected to begin on The Creep this fall in the UK.
Of the project, writer-director Christopher Smith had the following to say:
“Ever since I finished Creep and released it to the world, I’ve wanted to return to that story. I’ve always felt there was unfinished business. While I’ve always loved the purity of what I achieved in my first film with Franka Potente and Sean Harris, I know there’s a scarier, more evolved film still inside me.”
Smith continues:
“Now I want to revisit Creep not only as an experienced filmmaker and writer, but also as someone who has lived in London for over 30 years. I’ve worked passionately on the script to retain the dread of the original, while enhancing the characters, deepening the humour, and amplifying the action. My goal is to create a film that not only builds on the original but surprises and shocks—intelligently—with a modern twist for a new Gen Z audience.”
