Tony Todd, best known for playing the titular role in the Candyman horror franchise, has sadly died aged 69.
In a career spanning 44 years, Todd challenged racial stereotypes in Hollywood, with his chilling yet sympathetic performance as Daniel Robitaille in all four Candyman films.
However, before his break into the mainstream with 1992’s Candyman, Todd first gained wide genre attention portraying Ben in Tom Savini’s 1990 remake of Night of the Living Dead.
This would set off a chain-reaction that would see Todd become a staple in the horror genre for the next 34 years.
Following the enormous success of Candyman, Todd would take on countless roles, including a part in 1994’s The Crow, and flexing his dramatic prowess in the 2000 erotic drama Le Secret.
Besides returning for 1995’s Candyman: Farewell to the Flesh, and 1999’s Candyman: Day of the Dead, Todd was also heavily associated with the Final Destination and Hatchet franchises.
As sinister mortician William Bludworth, the actor would appear in 4 of the 6 Final Destination entries. His final on-screen appearance will be released posthumously with Final Destination: Bloodlines, expected to premiere next year.
For Adam Green’s Hatchet franchise, Todd went in a slightly more comedic direction, portraying the flamboyant Reverend Zombie in 3 entries, ending with 2017’s Victor Crowley.
Besides appearing in over 100 features, Todd also had several significant roles on television. He was cast in the lead role for 1995’s critically acclaimed Western-drama Black Fox, before bagging recurring roles on the likes of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Stargate: SG1, and playing the director of the CIA in 3 seasons of the hit spy-comedy series Chuck.
Todd’s distinctive voice also netted him a plethora of vocal roles and cameos over the years.
Beloved by fans for his warm and friendly demeanour, Todd was also a regular on the horror convention circuit. Consequently, his tragic passing has triggered an outpouring of grief, with tributes coming from the likes of Felissa Rose, Virginia Madsen, Clive Barker, Sean Clark, and Adam Green, to name only a few.
Tony Todd died November 6th 2024, after battling stomach cancer for quite some time. He is survived by two children, and reportedly had several completed projects awaiting release at the time of his passing. Todd was only 69 years old.
