Actor Anthony Head, best known for his role in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, has died.
Born Anthony Steward Head on February 20th 1954, Head was a native of Camden Town, London.
Head seemed destined to be in show business, with his father being an award-winning documentarian, and his mother being an actress.
First attending Sunbury Grammar School, Head honed his performance skills whilst later attending London’s Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts.
Head began his career on-stage, in the musical Godspell in 1979, kicking off a love of musical theatre. Soon afterward, he began a prolific career performing on television.
Head made his feature film debut in 1981, with a supporting role in Lady Chatterley’s Lover.
Whilst working regularly on UK television, on shows like Howard’s Way and V.R. 5, Head landed a coffee commercial for Nescafe Gold Blend. This spot would garner significant attention, and continue to be broadcast until 1999. It was through this commercial that work opened up for Head in the United States.
Following television guest spots on shows including NYPD Blue, Head looked set for TV fame in the UK after winning a lead role in Jonathan Creek. However, head backed out of the role, after winning the part of Rupert Giles in the WB pilot Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
This role propelled Head to international stardom, and would see him stick with the show for its entire seven season run. However, Head requested reduced screen time following the show’s fifth season, seeking to spend more time with his family in the UK.
Head’s Buffy fame set his career alight, seeing him cast in the likes of Little Britain, Merlin, and Doctor Who on the small screen.
Similarly, Head’s feature career boomed, with him receiving roles in Sweeney Todd, the Percy Jackson series, and Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance.
Head’s particularly smooth voice also landed him a plethora of narration work for the BBC, as well as radio spots on the likes of The Archers.
More recently, Head had garnered further notice and acclaim for his three-season run on the sports-based comedy-drama Ted Lasso.
Head’s final roles would be in the comedy-drama movie Upgraded, and the Netflix hit show Bridgerton.
Anthony Head died on June 1st 2026 due to complications from Pneumonia. His death was announced on June 5th. He is survived by his daughters Daisy and Emily, and was predeceased by his wife Sarah in December 2025. Anthony Head was 72 years old.
