Following various delays, Bubba the Redneck Werewolf is finally headed to home video in the US, courtesy of MVD Entertainment. The horror comedy will hit DVD in October, two years since its Florida premiere. The delays have made for rather apt timing however, with this year marking the 20th anniversary of Mitch Hyman’s cult comic, on which the film is based. Hyman serves as executive producer, as well as playing the Devil in the film.
Bubba is directed by Brendan Jackson Rogers, who happens to be a big fan of the comic series. “The fact that there is so much material from the comics to pull from is awesome,” he says in the film’s press release. “Bubba is literally already a franchise. I personally would love to see Bubba battle other classic monsters (vampires, mummies, Frankenstein’s monster, etc), but to give each of these monsters a southern twist.”
Pre-werewolf Bubba (Chris Stephens) is a night shift dogcatcher and local laughingstock who longs to win back the heart of his high school sweetheart, Bobbie Jo (Malone Thomas). But when the Devil comes down to Florida, Bubba signs a deal to make himself a badass, only to wake up the next morning permanently transformed into a werewolf (Fred Lass). In order to save his town and be the hero he longs to be, Bubba will have to navigate a country crock of malicious bikers, cryptic hobos, gaseous gypsies and even a zombie hoard – leading to a climactic duel with the dark prince.
“My goal here is to not only see that the filmmaker’s vision is kept intact in bringing this movie to market but also serve the fans of the genre something they have never seen before,” says Eric Wilkinson, MVD’s Director of Acquisitions and Sales. “Bubba is funny, original and just plain bat-shit crazy and that’s just how I like it. I look forward to releasing this movie later this year.”
The press release also details the special features appearing on MVD’s DVD, which are as follows:
* 16 Min Documentary: ‘From Page to Screen: The Making of Bubba the Redneck Werewolf‘
* Deleted Scenes
* Blooper Reel
* Werewolf & Devil Makeup Process Videos
