Early this year, Jackson Stewart confirmed that he was busy penning the sequel to last year’s festival hit Beyond the Gates, his awesome, 80s-obsessed horror film about a cursed VHS board game. Today brings some very, very good news about the forthcoming follow-up, as we learned that one of the high priests of boundary-pushing splatter will produce the film, the great Brian Yuzna.
“I’ve been working with Brian pretty closely on the story for [Beyond the Gates 2], and it’s just been absolutely delightful,” Stewart told the Pure Cinema podcast. “Basically I would be back directing it and Barbara [Crampton] and Jesse [Merlin] would be in it, but it would be like a period piece so there probably wouldn’t be any other carry-over from the other cast [except for] maybe like an end credits tag or something.”
Having produced Stuart Gordon’s films Re-Animator, From Beyond and Dolls, Yuzna (pictured) broke into directing with 1989’s masterpiece of gooey excess, Society, as well as Bride of Re-Animator that same year. Oddly, Stewart made reference to Yuzna’s directorial debut when talking about his Beyond the Gates 2 script back in February, telling the Scream Addicts Podcast: “It’s definitely bigger scale, and a little bit more in the vein of the ’80s paranoia horror movies like The Stuff and Society.”
I can’t imagine anyone better to work with Stewart on Beyond the Gates 2. Here’s hoping things get moving quickly.
