For almost fifty years, The Exorcist II: The Heretic has had a complex reputation amongst cinema lovers.
It was never going to be an easy task crafting a sequel to one of the most successful horror films in history. However, legendary filmmaker John Boorman seemed like just the man for the job! With a celebrated director, and a cast including Richard Burton, Linda Blair, Louise Fletcher, and Ned Beatty, it seemed like nothing could go wrong.
Then Exorcist II: The Heretic was released…
Described as “an embarrassment,” and “nonsensical,” the sequel was quickly laughed off screens. In the decades that followed, it was widely criticised as “one of the worst movies of all time.” And like any “good” bad movie, Exorcist II: The Heretic has garnered a cult following.
Now, after decades of dismissing the film, John Boorman finally speaks his peace in a brand-new documentary.
Boorman and The Devil sits the filmmaker down, alongside a stacked cast of other interviewees, and delves into Boorman’s complex relationship with The Heretic.
The documentary covers everything from the movie’s early development, through its chaotic, endless production, and its legendarily poor reception.
Alongside Boorman, the impressive cast of interviewees includes Linda Blair, Joe Dante, Garrett Brown, Mike Flanagan, and the late Louise Fletcher in her final appearance.
Boorman and the Devil comes to us from filmmaker David Kittredge, and has been picked up by Yellow Veil Pictures. Following the documentary’s enormous success on the festival circuit, it is now set to open regionally across the United States.
After debuting in New York on August 28th, Boorman and the Devil will then open in Los Angeles, Seattle, Columbus, Houston, and many other major cities on September 4th.
