Are we about to head back to Elm Street?
We must preface this article with the fact that nothing has been confirmed yet and what we’re about to discuss are only rumours, but they have emerged from reliable sources and are exciting all the same.
Last week word began to filter out that a new Nightmare on Elm Street project was indeed in development after years of speculation. The last we heard of the series was back in 2019 when The Wes Craven Estate agreed to field pitches for a new movie following the success of 2018’s Halloween.
Now it seems that the company responsible for bringing Michael Myers back to the big screen have secured another icon. Indeed, the company rumoured to be at the helm of this new Nightmare chapter is Blumhouse Productions, if true, this fulfils a long-held wish of founder Jason Blum.
Furthermore, word suggests that this new project will follow the recent horror trend of legacy sequels, and pick up where the 1984 original left off. A trilogy of films is said to be under consideration, thus following the Halloween, Scream and Exorcist blueprints.
But what about the most important thing… Freddy Krueger, what do we know? Well, not much. Blum has made no secret of his desire to bring back Robert Englund should he acquire Nightmare, but will he be able? In recent months Englund has ruled out a return, citing his age and the associated health problems. However, Blum has recently boasted of enticing 90-year-old Ellen Burstyn back to The Exorcist and claims he “can get anyone back.” Would Englund reconsider if the offer was right? If these rumours come to pass, hopefully time will tell.
If true, it is likely no announcements have been made due to the current strike action that is paralysing Hollywood. This is one we’ll have to keep an eye on closely and will be sure to report any further developments… Freddy’s been away from his children for much too long.
