The Exorcist: Believer didn’t set the box-office alight like Blumhouse and Universal hoped it would. Despite topping the charts, Believer was panned by critics and audiences, with much of the discourse aimed at director David Gordon Green.

Initially the first in a planned trilogy of films, Believer’s sequel The Exorcist: Deceiver was quickly removed from its June 2025 release date. Green exited the project soon after, and it seemed that The Exorcist was being put to bed once more.

However, now we have quite unexpected news, as various trusted sources report that filmmaker Mike Flanagan is being sought to steer the franchise back on course.

Flanagan has had multiple box-office hits for the genre, including Oculus and Ouija: Origin of Evil. However, it is his television work that earned Flanagan serious horror cache, with his adaptions of The Haunting of Hill House and The Haunting of Bly Manor garnering universal acclaim.

Now, with the news that Flanagan is “in talks” to tackle a new Exorcist chapter, fans are looking towards his similarly themed series Midnight Mass and calling Flanagan the “perfect” choice for the franchise.

However, Flanagan has made no official comment on the press reports, and it remains unclear if his contribution will be the originally planned Deceiver, or an entirely new chapter.

Given the fact Universal paid $400 million for The Exorcist franchise rights, it’s quite clear they won’t rest until they see a return on their investment. We’ll watch this one closely and report any further developments.
