Back in February, we reported that filmmaker Dan Trachtenberg was set to return to the world of Predator with a new spin-off entitled Badlands. Trachtenberg had previously experienced enormous success with Prey, also a Predator spin-off.
The project gained further momentum when it was reported in June that The Neon Demon star Elle Fanning had joined Badlands, taking on the lead role. Now, we have received confirmation that the project has begun filming, and we have our first plot details!
Badlands is set to “further expand” the Predator universe, opening the titular species up to a greater number of time periods and settings. Said to be set “in the near future,” the film will follow “two very different sisters.” Their familial bond will be put to the ultimate test when they both pursue a very deadly mission…
Sounds promising!
Said to be a “high priority” for 20th Century Studios, it remains unknown whether the studio intends to release Badlands to streaming, akin to Prey. As we know, the success of Prey led the studio to rethink several direct-to-streaming releases, most notably Alien: Romulus. So, could Predator also be heading back to the big screen?
Romulus director Fede Alvarez has been open about his desire to helm a crossover film with Trachtenberg in recent weeks, so… tentatively, we say, watch this space…
