Lionsgate are fast-tracking a reboot of Bret Easton Ellis’ American Psycho, according to reliable sources.
Call Me by Your Name and Suspiria filmmaker Luca Guadagnino is allegedly in “final negotiations” to direct the project, from a new script penned by Scott Z. Burns. Burns is likely best known to genre fans for the 2011 pandemic hit Contagion.
Sources were quick to stress that this will not be a remake of the 2000 hit starring Christian Bale, but will act as a fresh interpretation of Ellis’ classic novel.
Frenesy Films will be undertaking producing duties, under the watchful eye of Sam Pressman and Pressman Films. Pressman Films was also responsible for producing Mary Herron’s 2000 adaption of American Psycho.
Of the project, Lionsgate had the following to say:
“We are thrilled to add another elite filmmaker to our upcoming slate. Luca is a brilliant artist, and the perfect visionary to create a whole new interpretation of this potent and classic IP.”
Whilst there is no word on cast just yet, fans of the IP have been vocal in championing disgraced actor Armie Hammer for the role of Patrick Bateman. Whether or not anything will come of such clamouring, we’ll have to wait and see.
Lionsgate is said to be fast-tracking an American Psycho reboot in a bid to secure a hit picture. 2024 has so far had the studio suffer several high-profile flops, including Eli Roth’s Borderlands and the ill-advised remake of 1994’s The Crow.
Can a reimagining of one of their most beloved properties turn things around? We’re intrigued to find out.
