What is happening to our beloved horror survival games?
First, Friday the 13th: The Game was forced to cease production, given the franchise was trapped in a brutal lawsuit. Last year, Gun Interactive announced that the servers would be shut down.
Similarly, in September of 2023, just a year after its release, Saber Madrid announced Evil Dead: The Game would receive no further content. Although the servers remain online, the cessation of updates never bodes well for a video game’s shelf life.
Now, the horror-survival game curse seems to have struck again…
Gun Interactive have announced, less than two years after its premiere, that no further updates will be issued for Texas Chain Saw Massacre: The Game.
Gun issued a statement to their official website and social media, confirming that following the game’s upcoming patch, new content will cease. This means no new DLC, maps, patches, or bug fixes.
In their statement, Gun Interactive clarify that the reasoning behind the decision is that the game is now “fully realised,” with no more content needed.
Somewhat understandably, fans have reacted negatively to the news, with many citing the similarities between Friday the 13th: The Game’s end. Some have gone so far as to openly withdraw their support for the company, including any future products they will release.
Following the success of Texas Chain Saw Massacre: The Game, Gun’s decision to cease development is rather baffling. However, the company has clarified that rights issues are not to blame, and that the servers will remain active for “the foreseeable future.”
So, another sad end to a beloved horror-survival game. Have Gun Interactive made the wrong choice?
With Halloween: The Game currently in active development, should we brace for another disappointment down the line?
