In May 2017, Mike Mignola announced via his personal Facebook page that there would be a Hellboy reboot. Mike Mignola is the creator of Hellboy for Dark Horse comics. Not only did he work on the original comics but he was involved in the 2004 Hellboy film and its 2008 sequel Hellboy II: The Golden Army amongst his earlier works – which also include Bram Stoker’s Dracula in 1992, Atlantis: The Lost Empire in 2001, Blade II in 2002 and now the Hellboy reboot due for 2018.
Unlike the previous Hellboy films that were directed by Guillermo del Toro and starred Ron Perlman as Hellboy, the reboot is being directed by Neil Marshall and will be starring David Harbour of Stranger Things fame in the titular role. Joining David Harbour will be Ian McShane (American Gods) taking over from John Hurt as Professor Trevor Bruttenholm and Milla Jovovich (Resident Evil franchise) as the main antagonist Nimue, a medieval witch intent on destroying humanity. Principal Production is scheduled to begin in September 2017 with filming taking place in the Bulgaria as well as the United Kingdom. We can expect the reboot to be much darker than the previous films rating and more graphic violence based upon the proposed rating – the same rating as the recent Deadpool and Logan films.
The reboot is not the only news for Hellboy as a new Hellboy slot was released earlier this year courtesy of Microgaming’s Quickfire Studios. The slot is based on the original comic book series, taking players on a journey through the underworld and ultimately to the chamber of fire once you have completed the first four levels. As well as comic book looks and style there is also an interactive bonus round where along with Hellboy you travel through tunnels shooting the bad guys and collect prizes as you go. Something else that sets this slot game apart from regular slots is that you can also play it with bitcoin. Bitcoins are a relatively new, digital currency that is becoming increasingly popular in iGaming as well as branching out into retail outlets both online and in the high street. The underworld awaits fans of Hellboy comics and movies who want to give this title a spin.
2017 truly has been a great year for fans of the Hellboy franchise with both a new slot game released and the long-awaited news of a new Hellboy film in the works. It is quite possible that Dark Horse Comics may follow in the footsteps of comic book giants Marvel and DC with films in the future that expand upon Hellboy. For example, we could see an Abe Sapien Film, a Liz Sherman film or even an ensemble movie with the Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defence. One thing is for sure, we can expect to see many more films based on comic books in the future, not only from the bigger franchises but also more and more of the lesser well-known publishers. Comic book characters have definitely found a new life on the big screen.
